DepEd stand on a possible opening of classes in August or September

Under the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) imposed by our government due to COVID-19 pandemic, all schools in the country have been temporarily closed and classes were suspended.

The number of COVID-19 positive cases is also continuously rising which leads to forming a contingency plan within the Department of Education. One scenario is to postpone the opening of classes in June for the school year 2020-2021.

Another possible option is to move the opening of classes to August or September. However, DepEd Sec. Leonor Briones said that the schools are not fit for "summer" and it is not advisable for learners to go to schools as they would be exposed to extreme weather conditions.

“Public schools are not built for summer, our classrooms are not fit for extreme heat,” Briones said.
