In an interview with DepEd Usec. Nepomuceno Malaluan regarding the opening of classes for the school year 2020-2021, he mentioned that the ideal number of students in a classroom set-up for the resumption of classes is between 15 - 20 students only.
The recommendation of 20 students per classroom, if face-to-face classes continue, was from Senator Win Gatchalian.
When asked if this recommendation from Sen. Gatchalian if possible especially in public schools, Usec. Malaluan said "Tama 'yun, kung susundin natin ang social distancing, 'yung dati nating class size ay hindi magiging compliant. Tama 'yung estimate ni Sen. Win, sa aming pagtataya ay 15 to 20 students to be able to comply to social distancing."
He also stressed that with this scenario, the number of classes will be split and will be scheduled for classroom learning accordingly. Hence, the learning instructions will be greatly affected and limited since it cannot all be delivered inside the classroom and so other alternative methods shall be implemented like distance learning which may happen in their homes.
Malaluan reiterated that they are in the process of constructing the learning continuity plan and the department will be presenting their recommendations regarding the finalization of the schedule for the opening of classes. With all this, he assured that DepEd is primarily prioritizing the welfare and safety of all learners and personnel in light of this pandemic.
