With the approval of Senate Bill No. 1541 on the 3rd and final reading from the Senate, DepEd states their position acknowledging the said bill and expresses no opposition unto it.
“We have stated our position, had there been a bill that would set a very specific date for opening, we might have objected to that but if it is to give the (DepEd) or the Executive (branch) or the President broader discretion in times of emergencies like these, we express no opposition to that,” said DepEd Undersecretary Atty. Nepomuceno Malaluan, in an online press briefing.
If this bill passes into law, it will amend the Section 3 of Republic Act 7797 or "An Act to Lengthen the School Calendar from Two Hundred (200) Days to Not More Than Two Hundred Twenty (220) Class Days”. In this R.A., the opening of classes shall be on the first Monday of June to the last day of August.
This bill will give the President the authority to adjust the class opening beyond August.
