Improving our learners' reading comprehension is as important as improving their basic reading skills. Let's always remember that reading will not be sufficient if they cannot infer or render meaning to it.
There are several ways on how to improve the reading comprehension of a child. Some are as follow:
1. Securing their basic reading skills. One cannot process what he cannot read. At some point, a child needs a simple or basic reading skill to start understanding or comprehending the reading material.
2. Materials appropriateness. Leveling the readers' capability and matching them to the best fitted materials can pretty much bring a smooth comprehension process.
3. Realistic and making connections. Find the inline reading materials for your readers. Choose something that mentions real life scenarios. It will somehow boost their interest if they can connect personal experiences to the texts they are into. Hence, giving meaning and comprehending will not be that difficult.
4. Posting questions. To suffice the comprehension, it is but necessary to assess what they understand from the story. Simple yet challenging questions are suggested to test and gauge their level of comprehension.
